NF525 Certification

Complete Guide for Software Publishers

NF525 certification is a regulatory requirement for publishers of management, accounting, or POS software sold in France. It ensures that the software complies with strict rules on security, unalterability, data retention, and archiving for tax purposes.

At Hacktiv’ Studio, we support publishers throughout the compliance process—from the initial audit to full certification.

What is the NF525 Certification ?

The NF525 label applies to software that records customer payments (accounting, management, or POS tools).
Its purpose is to fight VAT fraud by ensuring that recorded data cannot be altered or deleted without the tax authority’s knowledge.

NF525 is based on four core principles:

  • Data unalterability
  • Secure records
  • Transaction retention
  • Legally valid archiving

Is Your Software Affected ?

Your solution is subject to NF525 requirements if it:

  • Records customer payments
  • Is used by VAT-liable businesses in France
  • Works independently or as part of a broader system

💡 Even if your product is not strictly a POS system, certain features may still make it eligible. An audit helps clarify this grey area.

How to Get NF525 Certified ?

Here are the typical steps in the certification process:

  1. Compliance audit (feature analysis, architecture, logging, etc.)
  2. Technical and organizational recommendations
  3. Implementation of corrective measures
  4. Final testing
  5. Support during the final audit (optional)

We guide publishers through each step of this journey.

List of Approved Certification Bodies

In France, two official bodies can issue the NF525 certification:

  • INFOCERT
  • AFNOR Certification

Obtaining certification requires a rigorous process, including documentation and technical audits, followed by ongoing compliance checks.

What Are the Risks of Non-Compliance ?

Since January 1, 2018, failure to comply can result in:

  • A €7,500 fine per non-compliant software or system
  • A mandatory 60-day deadline to bring the product into compliance
  • Increased risk of tax audits

Even if some businesses are exempt, it is critical to accurately assess your status.
