Here are the answers to the most frequently asked questions about the certification of point-of-sale software (NF525) and accounting software (NF203).

As of February 2025, certification has become mandatory for all point-of-sale (POS) software used by VAT-registered professionals in France.
The goal is to ensure that POS systems comply with strict requirements regarding:
- Data unalterability
- Security
- Retention
- Archiving of fiscal data
There are two types of certification:
- NF525 – issued by INFOCERT
- Encaissements – issued by LNE (Laboratoire National de Métrologie et d’Essais)
Why choose NF525 certification instead of LNE certification ?
Legally, both certifications are equally valid — the choice is yours

What are the deadlines for NF525 compliance ?
The law provides a transitional period to allow software publishers and users to bring their solutions into compliance :
- From February 16 to August 31, 2025: Several forms of proof will be accepted:
- A compliance certificate
- A publisher’s self-declaration
- Proof of commitment to the certification process (e.g. signed agreement with a certifying body)
- From September 1, 2025 to February 28, 2026 : Only the following will be accepted:
- A valid compliance certificate, or
- Proof of engagement in the certification process
- From March 1, 2026 :
- Only a valid NF525 compliance certificate will be accepted as proof.
My software is not a POS system - does NF525 still apply ?
It depends.
If your software records payments or includes invoicing or payment modules, you may still fall under the NF525 requirements—even if it's not a traditional cash register.
A technical audit is strongly recommended to assess whether your solution is subject to NF525 compliance obligations
Is NF203 certification mandatory ?
No, NF203 certification is not legally required. However, it serves as official proof that an accounting software complies with French tax authority requirements.
It also enhances the publisher’s credibility, both with clients and in the event of a tax audit.
What is the difference between NF525 and NF203 ?
- NF525: For point-of-sale or sales management software
- NF203: For general accounting software
Who issues these certifications ?
The certifications are delivered by accredited bodies :
- INFOCERT: issues both NF525 and NF203
- AFNOR Certification: issues NF525 only
How long is a certification valid ?
Certifications are valid for 3 years, with an annual surveillance audit to ensure continued compliance.
What are the penalties for non-compliance with NF525 ?
- A €7,500 fine per non-compliant software or system
- A 60-day grace period is granted to achieve compliance
- If the issue is not resolved, additional fines may be imposed
Is it possible to get certified without external support ?
Yes, but the process is technical, demanding, and subject to rigorous evaluation.
